Outgoing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, whose firing came as a shock to everyone, made a statement today to address reporters from the State Department briefing room.
In his response, Tillerson appeared to be very emotional as he explained how Trump called him shortly after noon to tell him the news, notifying Twitter of the firing before Tillerson — like a coward. Despite his trembling voice, Tillerson noted that he wants his team to continue promoting his values of accountability and respect for others. Tillerson continued to praise as well as thank the State Department officials and Department of Defense staff for their work during his tenure, while also thanking members of the military and the American people.
But the one person Tillerson gave no recognition to was President Donald Trump, as noted by CNN reporter Kate Bennett.
Tillerson noticeably did not thank @realDonaldTrump, who he said called him at noon today. Trump’s tweet announcing Tillerson was out happened just before 9:00AM.

In fact, Tillerson refused to even murmur the President’s name but did throw in a couple of very obvious digs at his now-former boss toward the end of his statement.

Tillerson did not take questions from reporters. Furthermore, he said his term as the nation’s top diplomat will end at midnight on March 31. Until then, Tillerson is delegating his responsibilities to Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan. Tillerson’s statement proves that has far more class than Trump ever will.
