While it seemed for a brief moment that Donald Trump might actually stand up to the National Rifle Association, Americans have been let down yet again. Trump promised the country action on gun violence yesterday, but today he seems to have walked those thoughts back and has sold his soul to the NRA again.
Earlier today at the White House, Trump praised the NRA and stated that schools needed to be weaponized in order to prevent mass shootings. That’s right — instead of focusing on making better, safer gun laws, Trump wants to increase the number of guns.
Speaking to reporters, Trump praised the NRA as “good people” and said:
I think we really have a group of people that want to do the right thing. The NRA is composed of people that I know very well. These are good people. In many cases, great people. They’re patriots. They love our country. The NRA wants to do the right thing. I’ve been speaking to them. They do want to do the right thing. Look, I haven’t been here that long. This has been going on for a long time. Many years, decades. And we’re going to get it fixed. But the only way you’re going to get it fixed is you have to have a certain degree of offensive power within the school. It can’t only be defense. You have to have protection within the schools. And we’re going to work it out. But we are going to be very, very powerful, strong on background checks. Especially having to do with people with mental problems.”
This is pretty reminiscent of the time that Trump called Nazis “some very fine people” after the attack in Charleston, Virginia — so I guess we really can’t expect much more from a man who actually meant those words.
Trump has once again failed to lead this country and make it better or safer. Anyone with half a brain knows that Trump’s idea of increasing guns in schools will only lead to more innocent people losing their lives. But clearly, the only thing that matters to Trump right now is making the NRA happy. You can watch his disgusting speech below:
