On Friday, Donald Trump became the first president to speak in front of a designated anti-gay hate group gathering. The Values Voter Summit is an annual meetup of evangelical leaders, anti-gay activists, preachers of the “prosperity gospel,” and all of their adherents.
Put on by the Family Research Council, an offshoot of “Doctor” James Dobson’s anti-everything foundation “Focus on the Family,” current FRC president Tony Perkins was absolutely thrilled to have Trump on the VVS schedule. Would-be presidents have spoken in the past, and the FRC — which is legally a political action committee — uses the Summit to hold a “straw poll” during every presidential election season for Republican candidates. The last one, held in 2015, had Donald Trump placing last among the top five candidates with only five percent of the vote.
But no matter! These “Christians” are quite adept at simply adjusting their beliefs to accommodate whoever the current most powerful Republican is in America. After Trump’s unlikely victory, everyone involved quickly adapted to their new roles: For Trump, that of a brand new Christian, unfamiliar with the Bible yet willing to learn; for Tony Perkins and evangelical voters, rape apologists and hypocrites.
The Summit featured everything you might expect from a giant gathering of people who hate the LGBTQ community. There were conversion therapy handouts, “testimonials” from ex-gay converts, and instructions on how best to stifle your child’s identity in an effort to convince them their feelings are meaningless and that their lives will be better if they reject everything in their hearts and just pretend.
According to a report from Business Insider:
Affirming gender dysphoria via public education and legal policies will confuse children and parents, leading more children to present to ‘gender clinics’ where they will be given puberty-blocking drugs. This, in turn, virtually ensures that they will ‘choose’ a lifetime of sterility, toxic cross-sex hormones, and likely consider unnecessary surgical mutilation of their healthy body parts as young adults.”
They even handed out buttons:

The fact that they used Comic Sans on a thing they paid actual money to produce and hand out for free speaks volumes about the collective intelligence of the Values Voter Summit and its attendees.
This likely doesn’t even cap off the litany of betrayals by Donald Trump of the LGBTQ community. For every promise of protection, Trump has reneged. He has thrown down the pride flag he once waved at a rally and embraced instead the Gadsden and Nazi flags of the white supremacists he now protects instead.
